across your neck
04:32
|
|||
There was a storm the night I broke into your home
And the sky held its breath as I strode from room to room
You lay awake in the red-grey alarm clock light
Waiting patiently for its clatter to resume
My mouth was filled with the bellicose taste of ink
You undressed; your face impossible to gauge
Did I imagine that the storm drew away
As I turned you like a page, as I turned you like a page
Should I write these words across your neck --
A dotted line of disrespect --
Just to wipe the ink clean from my fingers?
In the heavy light of warm late afternoon
We fell asleep in a stolen car’s back seat
Parked on the brink of all of our indecent plans
We woke to find them rendered newly incomplete
When I held you down when we both held so still
Did it matter who was in control?
There was longing in your indecisive will
There was something missing you begged me to make whole
Should I write these words across your neck --
A dotted line of disrespect --
Just to wipe the ink clean from my fingers?

stilled wind
02:01
|
|||
I’ve been trapped by the stilled wind
and the clear white sky
I’ve been held so long now
by this same weather
that the peace
and the quiet
have
grown
so
so
loud

fresh tape
04:54
|

we drove for hours in the rain
the wipers flicked a metronome
we tried to talk, but though we couldn’t quite explain
our words found passage to their home
weeks ago we found the cameras in our room
and traced the cables across town
a street-slick mix of pride and indignation bloomed
when at last tracked them down
the cameras were empty
no one was watching us
we took our time driving home
through the fine retreating rain
knowing that we were alone
and everything remained the same
the cameras were empty
no one was watching us

hurt you this way
04:18
|
|||
Darling, who has hurt you this way?
Tell me, darling, please tell me
Darling, who has hurt you this way?
Tell me, tell me, tell me please darling
The rains have ended
I’m here to color your sky
I never left, I’ll never leave
darling I told you
I would have tended
to that clouded look in your eye
so long ago
if only you’d have let me hold you
Someone once hurt you
and for them I can be a storm;
for them I have vengeance
I have raindrops like knives,
I have thunder
But I’ll never desert you, my love
I’ll keep you forever warm
so please end my suspense
tell me who did this?
and I’ll tear them asunder
Darling, who has hurt you this way?

come and gone
03:46
|
|||
the hurricane has come and gone
the hurricane has come and gone
but we’re still waiting here
… but we’re still waiting here
earlier, as we drove home
the wind twisted the leaves
uncovering
their pale undersides
and the scent of water in the air
was rich …
… and suspenseful
and then as
the house shook
and
we
held
close
everything we had done
seemed so small …
… so slight …
what could we make that would shake this place
and why should we even try?
the hurricane has come and gone
the hurricane has come and gone
… but we’re still waiting here
but we’re still waiting here …

inclement weather
04:51
|
|||
Forgive us, our loves
We bring terrible news
Your made-up friends are dead
The sky up above
Has abandoned its blues
For a dull shade of red
So you can bury your head
in your pillow for hours
We won’t bang on the door
We’ve weathered a week
Of interminate showers
Your tears are just one more
Don’t leave the lights on now--
--They’re never coming back
Don’t whisper it so loud--
--They’re never coming back
(inside voice-- inside--use your inside voice--inside
--inside voice--inside--use your inside voice)
We could lie to your face
But you’d never adjust
We’d get caught in the chase
Complicit to the crime
We’re not looking for trust
When your faith is so tired
But we don’t have much time
And your guilt has expired

bite your tongue
04:52
|
|||
there was a storm
the night we moved into our home
as though the sky could not hold
its breath anymore
the neighbors watched
with frank and undisguised suspicion
as we brought our equipment
through the front door
our experiments filled the night sky
they drained the clouds of their sound
everyone around us hid beneath their ears
as if the end would never come
… as if the end would never come
did you say that you lost your umbrella?
and that it looks just like mine?
bite your tongue, i’m not sharing
and it looks like rain all the time
… we’ve erased the very language of the sky
… denied all that there is left to deny
… and still we cannot clean the ink from our fingers
